After watching (TEDx Talks, 2013)., it is safe to say I will not use my common sense to think people know what I know or know what I think they should know about blended learning. Common sense is an effective tool for behavior modification. It is a set of behaviors common to most people. It is a natural way that we learn to act. We are born with common sense, and then, over time, we incorporate it into our behaviors. Common sense has increased the probability of positive behavior by 75% and decreased the likelihood of negative behavior by as much as 50% (TEDx Talks, 2013). The three myths of behavior change are common sense, rational choice, and rational ignorance. The first myth is common sense. I may have heard it before. Common sense tells us that what feels right is right. We often think that we have a deep understanding of our thoughts and feelings. However, it is not easy to trust what we experience in our minds. We often mistakenly trust common sense because of hindsight bias, overconfidence, and the tendency to perceive order in random events. Dr. Cross has identified six sources of change in a person's life. These six sources are the Influencers. Dr. Cross states that "common sense alone will not ensure the success of a behavior change" (p.10). Her model, "The Influencer's Model of Six," includes six categories that serve as sources of influence on an individual's decision to make a behavior change: 1) intrinsic motivation, 2) social norms, 3) reinforcement, 4) control, 5) beliefs about capabilities, and 6) beliefs. According to the Influencer's Model of Six, several Sources of influence play a role in determining whether a behavior will change. These sources of power include Individual Characteristics, Social Influences from Others, Environmental Context, and the Role of the Media. We will focus on our classroom's individual, social influence, and context. The Influencer's Model of Six describes the sources of influence that create the conditions under which people make decisions and the influence that occurs when these sources are in balance. The Influencer's Model of Six Sources of Influence is the theory that has guided this book (TEDx Talks, 2013). It will help me to understand the science of behavior change. To change behavior, I must first determine what people are doing to get where they are. Once I have a baseline of behavior, I can change what people are most likely to do. Dr. Cross suggests that I need to know the difference between the myths of behavior change because they often explain why people fail to change their behavior. The first key strategy is obvious. Meaning that if the administrators and teachers are not aware of the risk behavior, they will not recognize it as a problem in the first place. That is to say; the behavior is so apparent that there is little or no point in arguing against it. The second is to challenge the idea that the status quo is better than the desired behavior. The third is to identify behaviors that I would not have planned to change if I were in a normal situation. Look for crucial moments - When deciding or acting, it may be helpful to ask myself: What is the most critical moment in this situation? What is the most crucial moment of all time? This may help me focus on the most important things and make good decisions. Learning from people who have already done the behavior we want to encourage is one of the most powerful tools in the Influencer's Model of Six. People who are doing the behavior we want to promote and willing to share their strategies for success are a potent source of inspiration for others. In addition to learning their approach, we also knew which methods worked for them and which did not. In this case, we are looking for specific and easy strategies. I need to understand that they do not want to slave to the culture busters. I want to use all the tools at my disposal to change the culture. Because when I do, I can have influence. As described by Dr. Cross, spot culture busters are essential because they enable people to identify the behaviors they wish to change. A critical factor in the change effort is that leaders and organizations must trust and believe in the proposed change. I will accomplish this by bringing about a win-win situation where the difference is. It is all about having some common sense and thinking about how we can use some of the influencer's recommended sources of influence to create a change initiative that will be most effective. The Influencer's Model of Six is the most widely used model for predicting behavior change. It focuses on the six sources of influence that people use to decide whether to change.
