After watching TED Talk Sinek's Start with Why - how great leaders inspire action (Ted, 2009), I am more motivated than ever to pursue my innovation plan for my school. I felt my innovation plan in my heart and mind before the Video, but now I realize I must make my administrators think it from their hearts. I need to start with the WHY before I can achieve my goal of implementing a blending learning culture in the classrooms at my school. I have to relate to something in their hearts to bring their minds to change the culture in our learning environment. I need to get the administrators to embrace my innovation plan because they are the leaders who will believe in my schedule to attract more participants. My understanding of the Diffusion of Innovation Theory gives me a sense of how I need to promote change for my organization.
I feel people are used to focusing on results. Our society wants to see results, and they want them fast. Therefore, we forget to use our hearts sometimes when making decisions. We are emotional creatures but think about when you were younger, and you fell on the ground. Someone would tell you to get up and brush it off. We keep those same characteristics and mindsets with us as we grow into adults. People want money. They want to make something and sell it, but as Sinek stated in TED Talk Sinek's Start with Why Video (Ted, 2009) - it will not be as successful as a person who does something from the heart.
As I move forward with my innovation plan, I will follow Dr. Kotter's advice of "Win over hearts and minds" (Kotter, 2011). I know that I have to capture the hearts and minds of the people I want to inspire to help me make the desired change in my school. I asked "why" questions are the first and most important things I need to do because they set the steps to succeed with my innovation plan. People need to understand that I am passionate about my goal for the school. I am resulting in them, seeing my passion, and getting aboard the mission to change to a blended learning culture school. The administrators need to know the time is now to make this change, and it is time to show our students that we care deeply about their education. My "why" needs to inspire people to change the world of learning from our students.
